🍿 Maple Popcorn Recipe
This maple butter popcorn is one of the best low-effort ways to make flavored popcorn, IMHO. Here are the ingredients you need to make my popcorn maple syrup recipe:
- 6 cups air popped popcorn
- ½ cup maple syrup (100% pure maple syrup)
- 2 tablespoons butter (use coconut oil for vegan maple caramel corn)
- Sea salt (optional)
You can pop your own popcorn kernels or buy plain popped popcorn from the store. You’ll also need a candy thermometer, a small saucepan, and some parchment paper to make this recipe.
➕ How to Make Maple Popcorn on Stove
Here are the step-by-step instructions for how to make sweet popcorn:
- Put the popcorn in a large bowl and set aside. Put the maple syrup and butter in a non-stick pot on the stove over medium heat. Melt butter and sweetener together to the soft crack stage (270F or 132C), whisking occasionally. (This “caramel sauce” will get bubbly!)
- After heating, quickly stir the maple syrup mixture into the popcorn. (It's important to work quickly, because it hardens fast! However, be careful because it is also extremely hot.)
- Spread the maple syrup out on a large sheet of parchment paper in a single layer. Sprinkle with salt, if desired. Let it dry and harden for about 10 minutes, then break the maple sugared popcorn into pieces and enjoy!
Note: If your room temperature is hot and/or humid, let the popcorn harden in the fridge instead of on the counter. This maple caramel popcorn is best when freshly made, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container for a day or two.
How can I add flavor to my popcorn?
My favorite maple popcorn seasoning is salt, because the sweet and salty combo is tough to beat! Here are some other ways to flavor popcorn:
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla extract
- Peanuts
- Chopped pecans, chopped walnuts, almonds, or other nuts
- Crumbled cooked bacon

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule
This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). Is maple popcorn good? Yes! Taste is subjective, but we love sweet candied popcorn made with maple syrup, and think it is delicious! Unfortunately, like white sugar, maple syrup is an added sugar that should be consumed in moderation. On the bright side, popcorn is a whole grain that those on a gluten free diet can enjoy.
